Learn at Home

A note from the principal

You are not alone

Learn at Home is not a registered school or a registered independent school. We are a registered civil educational institute and a tutor support centre. Registering as a school would force us to copy the mainstream system — and that is exactly what our families have chosen to step away from.

Your child attends a learning centre. We facilitate the curriculum, but parents remain primarily responsible for their child's education. Our heart is to walk alongside you.

Respect our structure

How the centre is run

  • Each facilitator manages their own classroom.
  • Yolanda manages her own classroom, the day-to-day matters at Learn at Home, and any situation that cannot be resolved between a parent and a facilitator.
  • Every facilitator's priority is the children, so meetings are scheduled around facilitator and management availability.
  • Open-door policy: children may speak with Yolanda about any issue with a peer or facilitator. We encourage families to use it.
  • Incidents during centre hours (08:00 – 13:30) are addressed and recorded. Repeated incidents lead to a formal letter and discussion.
  • After-hours issues follow the same procedure. Issues not reported through the official procedure cannot be addressed.

Keeping in touch

Please know that we cannot answer calls during class times. You are always welcome to send an email to admin@learnathome.co.za, and we use Class Dojo and Google Classroom for day-to-day learner updates, lessons and assignments.

Appointment procedure

How to book a meeting

  1. 1Ask. Email info@learnathome.co.za, or call outside class times (before 08:00, 10:00 – 10:30, 12:00 – 12:30 or after 14:00). Tell us who you would like to see, what it is about, and your name and number.
  2. 2We invite. Yolanda checks with the relevant facilitator and emails you a meeting invite with the date, time and duration.
  3. 3You accept. Accept the invite and the meeting is confirmed. Meetings are by appointment only.

Discipline

Positive, fair and consistent

We handle the small day-to-day issues ourselves. When a child shows no respect, places someone in danger, or keeps on with matters we have already resolved, it is placed on record and you will be asked to fetch your child.

Fighting, swearing and bullying are not tolerated. These are treated as serious and dealt with according to our Student Code of Conduct, General Rules and Discipline Policy and our anti-bullying policy.

Cellphone policy

Phones away during instruction

Cellphones are useful for communication and safety, but they also bring risks: access to explicit content, unsupervised internet use, inappropriate photos and — above all — distraction. Research shows learners check their phones many times during a lesson and can lose a significant share of class time to them.

Phones are therefore not permitted during instructional time. The only exception is educational use approved by the facilitator. Phones must be switched off and handed in if required, and management and staff enforce this consistently. Parents who need to reach a learner during the day should contact the centre.

Parents — not the centre — are encouraged to use parental-control software to monitor and restrict their child's phone use. With clear ground rules and close supervision, a phone can be a learning tool; without them, it is a distraction.
